Heritage Engineering

S+H provides specialised structural engineering services for heritage places, supported by practitioners experienced in the unique challenges of working with significant buildings. We collaborate closely with heritage consultants, architects, councils, institutions, project managers, and builders to deliver outcomes that are both technically robust and respectful of original fabric.

Our heritage capability includes:

  • Conservation works encompassing maintenance, preservation, restoration, reconstruction, adaptation, and interpretation.

  • Retention of existing elements, reintroduction of uses, and adaptive reuse.

  • Monitoring, testing, and investigations.

  • Managing the interface between new development and heritage fabric.

  • Building code assessments, including compliance validation through monitoring, testing, investigation, analysis, and targeted modification where required.

  • Modifications to achieve DDA compliance.

Our practice adheres to the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter. Where structural interventions are necessary, we prioritise solutions that are reversible, clearly distinguishable as new work, and designed to minimise impact on the cultural significance of the place.

Structural Engineering

S+H delivers structural engineering for complex buildings, both new and existing. We work across contemporary architectural structures, advanced concrete and steel systems, post tensioned elements, and some of Australia’s most significant heritage places. From bespoke new structural forms to conservation works, we bring design precision and practical judgement to every project.

Our expertise includes:

  • Advanced analysis and modelling

  • Assessment and strengthening of existing and heritage structures with minimal intervention

  • Adaptive reuse, integrating new loads, openings, and services into existing buildings

  • Buildable solutions for constrained sites, staged works, and operational buildings

S+H are often engaged for projects where architects, builders, and clients require a high‑performance structural partner, someone who can resolve non‑standard geometries, design for challenging site conditions, integrate new structures with old, or navigate the complexities of heritage conservation and modern compliance.

Construction Engineering

S+H provides construction engineering services that make complex projects buildable, from contemporary architectural structures with demanding geometries to highly sensitive heritage sites where every intervention must be deliberate, reversible, and precise. We work confidently in environments with difficult access, unconventional sequencing, tight tolerances, and hybrid old and new interfaces.

Our construction engineering expertise includes:

  • Construction staging and sequencing for complex or constrained sites

  • Foundations, underpinning, and excavation support

  • Responsive design for latent conditions and evolving site constraints

  • Specialised construction solutions for remote or high exposure locations

We are often engaged where conditions are too complex for generic solutions, where the fabric, access, staging, or risk profile demands careful engineering judgement. Our construction engineering is defined by buildability, respect for heritage fabric, clear documentation, and collaborative problem solving, delivering practical outcomes tailored to the realities of building in challenging conditions.

Materials + Durability

S+H Engineering provides comprehensive materials expertise to diagnose deterioration, inform conservation strategies, and design repairs. Our materials services focus on compatibility, longevity, and preservation of original fabric for heritage structures, supporting sustainable conservation and reduced whole-of-life cost.

Our work includes:

  • Timber stress grading, decay assessment, and species identification

  • Concrete condition evaluation, destructive and non-destructive testing, and determination of structural geometry including reinforcement to inform structural capacity calculations

  • Brick and stone masonry investigation, determination of structural properties, and compatible mortar specification

  • Identification of metal composition including weldability

We tailor repair strategies to the environmentwhether sever marine environments, alpine environments, or locations with high relative humidity. Our designs respect original materiality while ensuring longterm performance and resilience. S+H employ the latest testing and investigative equipment and work closely with laboratories in Australia and internationally to accurately characterise materials and their condition.

Structural Health Monitoring

For buildings with damages or deterioration, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) provides the data needed to inform the repair strategy and guide conservation of heritage structures without unnecessary intervention. SHM allows for the design of repairs is informed by determining the amplitude of structural movement and rate of change.

S+H designs and implements monitoring systems that help owners understand how their buildings behave over time.

Our SHM services include:

  • Vibration monitoring, including for sensitive heritage fabric

  • Crack monitoring programs for concrete and masonry, including foundations

  • Risk categorisation matrices to prioritise maintenance

  • Long-term trend analysis and conservation recommendations

These methods enable targeted, costeffective repairs and minimise the risk of damage caused by vibration inducing sources such as neighbouring construction sites. Our monitoring programs are noninvasive and utilise the latest technology.
