The Wilson Hall, rebuilt in the 1950s after a fire destroyed its Gothic predecessor, is a defining example of International Style architecture on the University of Melbourne campus. Its layered heritage combines modernist design with symbolic links to the original hall, making it a nationally significant educational landmark.
The project addressed deterioration in external reinforced concrete stairs and landings—critical circulation elements that had suffered from corrosion. The goal was to restore structural integrity and safety without compromising the building’s architectural character or disrupting its ongoing use for graduations, lectures, and events.
Our team undertook a targeted structural assessment of the affected stairs and landings, including materials testing and visual inspections to determine the extent of deterioration. Corroded reinforcement and damaged concrete were treated using repair techniques compatible with the original fabric. Cast-in balustrade elements were carefully repaired to maintain their visual integrity, and temporary propping was implemented to ensure safety during works.
The solution prioritised minimal intervention and durability, aligning with Burra Charter principles. By focusing on discreet repairs rather than wholesale replacement, the project extended the life of these essential components while preserving the hall’s modernist aesthetic and ensuring compliance with current safety standards.
The repairs safeguard a key feature of Wilson Hall, enabling continued safe egress from the building. By retaining original materials and design intent, the project reinforces the building’s heritage value and supports sustainable conservation practices—ensuring this iconic venue remains functional and culturally significant for decades to come.
