Constructed in 1873–74, Lower Stony Creek Dam is Australia’s first mass concrete gravity dam and the third of its kind worldwide. Designed using early Portland cement and Rankine’s stability theories, it supplied water to Geelong for over 120 years and remains a landmark of engineering innovation. Its heritage significance lies in its pioneering use of concrete and its role in shaping regional development and public health.
The project aimed to assess the dam’s structural condition and review previous engineering reports to ensure that proposed works respected its heritage value. The challenge was to balance stringent safety requirements with conservation principles, avoiding unnecessary interventions while preserving original fabric.
Our team undertook a visual inspection of the dam wall to identify defects. We reviewed prior engineering reports to confirm whether heritage considerations had been integrated into their recommendations. Where gaps were identified, we provided advice aligning with the Burra Charter principles.
Lower Stony Creek Dam is more than an infrastructure asset—it is a cultural and technological milestone.
