The Stony Creek Bunkhouse is a rare example of early prefabricated timber construction in Victoria, originally built to accommodate workers in remote areas. Its heritage value lies in its simplicity and its role in supporting forestry and water supply operations during the development of regional infrastructure.
The client’s goal was to stabilise the structure while retaining as much original material as possible, ensuring compliance with modern standards without compromising its historic integrity.
Our team undertook a detailed structural assessment of the bunkhouse, including visual inspections and coordination of geotechnical investigations. The original framing had been undermined by soil erosion and rabbit burrows, leaving the structure vulnerable.
We designed new foundations and strengthening connections between timber members using concealed high-strength fasteners. These interventions were minimal, reversible, and compatible with the original materials, aligning with Burra Charter principles. Temporary support systems were implemented to allow safe installation without dismantling the building.
The solution ensured structural stability while preserving the building’s heritage character, enabling continued safe use and protecting its cultural significance for future generations.
The project safeguards a structure that reflects Victoria’s early resource management history. By retaining original timber fabric and stabilising the building, the intervention supports cultural continuity and sustainable conservation. The bunkhouse remains a functional and educational asset within the park, offering visitors a tangible link to the region’s industrial heritage.
