Constructed in 1859, Cape Schanck Lightstation is one of Victoria’s earliest coastal navigation structures, built to reduce shipwrecks along the treacherous Mornington Peninsula coastline. Its stone tower and associated buildings remain largely intact, forming a cohesive group that exemplifies 19th-century maritime engineering and social history.

The verandah framing to the lighthouse keeper’s cottage had deteriorated over time, posing a risk of structural failure. The client’s goal was to strengthen these elements while preserving original timber fabric and ensuring compliance with modern safety standards. The challenge lay in achieving this within a harsh coastal environment without compromising the building’s heritage value.

Our team undertook a detailed structural assessment of the verandah framing, identifying weakened connections and timber deterioration. The solution involved designing strengthening works using high-strength engineered fasteners, largely concealed within the existing structure to maintain its visual integrity.

All interventions were guided by Burra Charter principles, prioritising minimal visual impact, reversibility, and material compatibility. The design considered exposure to severe coastal conditions, ensuring durability and compliance with current codes for wind and structural safety.

This approach safeguarded the verandah’s historic character while delivering a robust solution that extends its service life and protects visitors and staff.

The works preserve a vital component of Cape Schanck Lightstation, enabling continued safe access and interpretation for visitors. By retaining original timber fabric and enhancing structural resilience, the project supports cultural continuity and sustainable conservation, ensuring this landmark remains a living link to Victoria’s maritime heritage.
