Built in 1882 as Carlton College, Greycourt has accommodated a wide range of uses over its long life—from a boys’ school and Domestic Arts Hostel to a private hotel, WWII military accommodation, and later a nurses’ residence for the Royal Melbourne Hospital. It now forms part of International House, supporting generations of students through its residential and communal spaces.
As part of planned maintenance and conservation activities within this historically significant building, S+H was engaged to provide temporary works engineering to facilitate safe access for contractors and ensure works could proceed efficiently within an occupied heritage environment. The project required sensitive coordination with building managers and students to minimise disruption while respecting the character and long‑standing function of the building.
Our team provided a series of targeted temporary works solutions that supported localised refurbishment activities. These works were developed to be simple, reversible, and minimally intrusive, aligning with best‑practice heritage principles. By enabling safe contractor access and safeguarding key areas during works, the temporary measures helped ensure continuity of use and preserved the integrity of the heritage fabric.
