The Former Valley Worsted Mills complex, built in 1924, is a rare example of early 20th‑century industrial architecture. Adaptively reused as Little Creatures Brewery, the site retains its distinctive brick façades and industrial character.
Around the perimeter, reinforced masonry flood walls with embedded steel angles had deteriorated over time. Corrosion in the steel angles caused cracking in the masonry, threatening structural integrity and heritage fabric. The project aimed to repair these walls, ensuring safety and longevity without compromising the wall's historic appearance.
S+H performed detailed structural analysis to accurately determine the capacity of the existing walls, enabling a targeted and efficient repair strategy. By considering arching action between piers in the upper sections of the wall, the design minimised local removal of heritage fabric and reduced the extent of intervention.
Repairs addressed corroded steel angles and restored masonry integrity, with all works designed for durability and minimal visual impact. This approach safeguarded the building’s industrial character while ensuring structural stability and long-term resilience.
This project reinforces Geelong’s cultural identity by preserving a site that bridges its industrial past and contemporary social life. By repairing critical structural elements with minimal intervention, the works maintain authenticity and ensure the building’s continued role as a vibrant hospitality venue. The approach prioritised sustainability by retaining original fabric wherever possible, reducing material waste, and extending service life.
