Imported from Glasgow in 1854, the Iron Store is a rare two‑storey prefabricated corrugated‑iron building combining ground‑floor retail with upper‑level living quarters—likely the last known of its type in Australia. Its arched corrugated‑iron roof spans approximately nine metres over wrought‑iron framing, with surviving cast‑iron window elements and timber consoles. After decades of exposure, the thin historic sheeting had perforated, creating structural vulnerability and risking loss of irreplaceable heritage fabric. The project’s purpose was to conserve the original roof and ensure long‑term stability while maintaining the building’s authentic appearance. Key constraints included preserving historic material, avoiding wholesale replacement of obsolete corrugated profiles, and working within tight access routes typical of heritage interiors.
The main challenge was a corroded tied‑arch corrugated‑iron roof that could not be replaced like‑for‑like—the required sheet thickness and rib depth are no longer manufactured. Following detailed investigations into geometry and load paths, the solution introduced slender new structural‑steel tied‑arch members positioned above the original roof, closely following its curved profile. The historic corrugated sheeting was retained in situ and secured to the new framing to restore stability without altering the building’s silhouette. Member splices were carefully detailed to allow components to be hand‑carried through the heritage interior, minimising disruption and avoiding unnecessary removal of original fabric. This discreet strengthening approach ensured structural safety, extended the building’s life, and preserved its defining industrial character.
